Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Filibuster?

A threat is only useful to your enemies if you are afraid of it. If they know they are going to be called on their bullshit, there is at least a fifty percent chance they will change their mind and back away. Granting your enemies the power of their argument before you even examine the strength of their offense gives them a victory they have not earned.

The threat of filibuster has Hairy Reed and the rest of the Senate running scared. As a result the health care bill is so full of compromises it may not be worth the effort. So why bother? Why not let them filibuster? It is a time-honored tradition. We should let it run its course.

Remember when Bill Clinton called the GOOP bluff on shutting down government? The voters were furious… at Congress. Clinton won.

In 1964 southern democrats filibustered the Civil Rights Act for 57 Congressional days. In the end the Act was passed.

Today, nearly 60 percent of the electorate favors health care reform with a public option. Let the voters see the GOOP using this extraordinary power to stop a reform movement that is essential to all Americans and we can win in 2010.
