Directly From My Heart

I think it is always appropriate on the second day of Zappadan to recognize the birthday of Richard Wayne Penniman.

Little Richard did, after all, write one of the best Zappa cover songs in the history. Maybe the best. Certainly one of my utter favorites.

By my calculation, Mr. Richard is 79 years old today. Happy birthday, sir, and thank you truly for “Directly From My Heart.” Let’s listen to a few versions. First. The original.

Then there’s the version on “Weasels Ripped My Flesh.” Personnel includes rhythm guitarist Lowell George (later of Little Feat) and Don “Sugarcane” Harris on the fiddle.

And we would be remiss if we did not take a moment to review the version by Fenton Robinson. It is something to behold.
