There’s A Riot Goin’ On

From Barry Miles’ Zappa: A Biography

Now that he had something to play music on, Zappa bought his first record: a 78 of ‘Riot In Cell Block Number 9’ by the Robins on the Spark label. … It was a prescient purchase by the 13-year-old Zappa, as the Robins had not yet had their big hit ‘Smokey Joe’s CafĂ©, which prompted Carl Gardner and Bobby Nun to leave and form The Coasters. It showed Zappa’s ear for quality.

I wish it were on YouTube. Fortunately, it is on eMusic. Click below and you shall hear it.

Zappa’s second record purchase was ‘Work With Me, Annie’ by Hank Ballard and the Midnighters, the first of a series with ‘Annie’ in the title.
