Checks and Balances

Category: President Barack Obama — Brady Bonk @ 8:02 pm

By the way. The first thing you will hear from the conservagoats with whom you will have to interact tomorrow is that President Obama “screwed up his oath.” He did not. Chief Justice Roberts did.

This is Roberts’ first time swearing in a President. And, he was attempting to administer the oath from memory. And, he still looks exactly like Otto the Autopilot from the “Airplane” movies.

Watch where the trip occurs and see for yourself which of these guys’ memories is serving them.

ROBERTS: I, Barack Hussein Obama…
OBAMA: I, Barack…
ROBERTS: … do solemnly swear…
OBAMA: I, Barack Hussein Obama, do solemnly swear…
ROBERTS: … that I will execute the office of president to the United States faithfully…

The phrase is “that I will faithfully execute the office.” Obama stops short to give the Chief Justice—also new at this and who for some reason is trying to work from memory—a moment to restate it. Then, though, he repeats Roberts’ initial misstatement of the oath, perhaps to save the Chief Justice some face:

OBAMA: … that I will execute…
ROBERTS: … faithfully the office of president of the United States…
OBAMA: … the office of president of the United States faithfully…
ROBERTS: … and will to the best of my ability…
OBAMA: … and will to the best of my ability…
ROBERTS: … preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.
OBAMA: … preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.
ROBERTS: So help you God?
OBAMA: So help me God.
ROBERTS: Congratulations, Mr. President.
